Little Millet Tomato Bath by Chef Manav

Little Millet Tomato Bath (Saame Tomato Bath) is a delicious and traditional way of cooking Little Millet (Saame). In this delicious recipe by Chef Manav, little millet rice is first cooked in a pressure cooker, later a spicy tomato paste is prepared and the millets are mixed into it.

INGREDIENTS

FOR COOKING LITTLE MILLET RICE
Little Millet (Saame) – 1 Cup
Water – 2 Cups

FOR COOKING TOMATO BATH MASALA
Fresh Ingredients
Tomato – Finely Chopped- 1 Cup
Onion – Finely Chopped – 1/2 Cup
Green Chilly – Slit into half – 2 to 3
Curry Leaves – 5
Ginger Garlic paste – 1 tsp
Coriander Leaves – Garnishing
Dry ingredients
Red Chilly Powder – 2-3 tsp
Turmeric – 1 tsp
Garam Masala – 1/4 tsp
Ghee/Oil – 4 tsp
Salt – to taste
Whole Spices
Bay Leaf – 2 nos
Clove – 5 nos
Cinnamon – 1piece

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Wash little millet with water thoroughly and drain the water. Cook the little millet in a pressure cooker.  For 1 measure of millet, use 2 measures of water.  After first whistle, reduce flame. 
  • Switch off the flame after 2nd whistle and leave it aside.  Let the millet cook in the steam for about 10 minutes.  After the cooker cools, transfer contents to a plate and let it rest.  Do not mix when the millet is hot as this will cause millet to lump.
  • Prepare a separate vessel to make the masala, put it on low flame. Add 2 teaspoon of ghee/oil in a vessel.  Add whole spices and fry for a minute.  Add onions and fry till translucent.  Add ginger garlic paste and fry for 2 minutes.  Add chopped tomatoes  and salt and mix well. 
  • Close the lid and let the tomato cook well and become soft. 
  • Once the tomatoes have cooked, add turmeric, red chilly powder and garam masala and mix well.  Add sliced green chilly. 
  • Now add the cooked and cooled millet rice and mix well. 
  • Garnish with coriander leaves.  Serve hot with raitha or chutney as accompaniment.
